It’s traditional, but not required, to wait for a person to die, or at least exit the arena, before naming too much after them.
That tradition is dead in today’s Washington, a city named for the first president, and where the current president and his allies have designs on naming as much as possible after him.
A center for the arts. The Kennedy Center, for instance, was unveiled in 1971, years after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Trump referred to it Thursday as the “Trump-Kennedy Center,” a perhaps intentional slip of the tongue presaging a possible future change. There’s an effort by some Republicans on Capitol Hill to rename the building entirely after Trump.
A center for peace. He made those comments about the Kennedy Center at an event in Washington where leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republican of Congo signed a peace deal. The event occurred at the former US Institute of Peace, an organization Trump’s administration has literally gutted with cuts, but which they have now renamed as the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
The naming is a not-subtle nod to Trump’s designs on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, something that has eluded him so far. He’ll have to settle, apparently, for the FIFA Peace Prize, an award invented by soccer’s government body. The first award will be presented, presumably to Trump, at the World Cup draw, which will be held at… the Kennedy Center… on Friday.
A stadium. RFK Stadium, the once and future home of the Washington Commanders, was only re-named after a Kennedy in 1969, after Robert F. Kennedy was also assassinated. It’d be “beautiful” to rename the stadium for Trump when it’s rebuilt, according to his allies. We’ll see what happens.
A ballroom. Supporters would also like to name the massive ballroom set to replace the demolished East Wing of the White House after Trump.
A little something for the kids. Lawmakers named taxpayer sponsored investment accounts for American kids “Trump Accounts,” which must smart for the Democrats who endorsed the progressive idea years ago. Unlike Obamacare, which is an unofficial name for a law Trump hates, but which is generally popular in the US, “Trump Accounts,” are written into law. One wonders if the next President will try to change them.
$1 coin. There’s talk of putting Trump’s likeness, which has already been draped on massive banners on government buildings during his term, on a commemorative coin. That’s despite an actual law that prevents the celebration of living people on legal tender.
